Winter Storm Warning
Josh Theobald
Hello, College Station!
As we brace for some snow and freezing rain overnight, it's crucial to prioritize safety. Here are some tips and recommendations to help you navigate this chilly weather:
Stay Home if possible:
- Minimize Travel: If you can work from home or delay errands, please do so. The less traffic on the roads, the safer it is for everyone.
- Check on Neighbors: Especially those who might need assistance or are more vulnerable in cold weather.
If You Must Travel:
Prepare Your Vehicle:
- Check your tires for adequate tread. If your tires have poor tread, you have much higher chances of losing control of the vehicle.
- Ensure your vehicle's lights, heating, and wipers are in good working order.
- Keep your gas tank at least half-full to avoid the fuel line freezing.
Safe Driving Tips:
- Slow Down: Speed limits are for ideal conditions; reduce your speed significantly in icy conditions. - Increase Following Distance: Double or triple your usual following distance to give you more time to react.
- Anticipate other drivers. Assume the other drivers aren’t paying attention or using safe driving techniques.
- Avoid hard Braking: If possible, slow down by taking your foot off the accelerator before braking. When you must brake, do so gently and give yourself plenty of room.
- Be Cautious on Bridges and Overpasses: These are the first to freeze and last to thaw.
- Avoid Cruise Control: It can cause your vehicle to accelerate at the wrong time on slick surfaces.
General Safety Tips:
- Dress in layers if you go outside to keep warm.
- Keep pets indoors if possible, as they are also susceptible to the cold.
- Ensure your home is adequately heated, and check for any drafts.
- Let faucets drip slowly overnight to avoid pipes freezing.
