From one commercial insurance office in Houston to a growing independent agency serving families, businesses, and communities across Virginia and beyond — this is the story of The Springer Agency.
Reta Springer started The Springer Agency in 1985 as a commercial insurance agency in Houston, Texas. What began as a focused commercial insurance operation would become the foundation for decades of client relationships, agency growth, and family leadership.
In 1991, Nationwide changed its insurance appetite and offered Reta a growing opportunity in Central Virginia. That move planted the roots for what would become The Springer Agency's Virginia home office and long-term connection to the Midlothian and Richmond communities.
With the help of Kent, Laura, and Esther, the agency won the prestigious Nationwide President's Conference award two years in a row. It was a major recognition that placed the agency among the top performers in the country.
The agency's second location was nearly three times the size of the first Hull Street office. The new space gave the team room to grow and placed the agency right near the neighborhoods, families, and businesses it was built to serve.
“Insurance has always been about more than policies. It is about helping people protect what matters, prepare for the unexpected, and recover when life gets complicated.”
In the 1990s and early 2000s, Nationwide promoted a program called Prom Promise. Its goal was simple and important: reduce alcohol-related accidents on prom night. The agency was proud to support a message focused on young drivers, safety, and community.
When an established Nationwide agent retired in 2001, all parties agreed that The Springer Agency was a strong fit for Keysville, Virginia. This became an important chapter in the agency's expansion into smaller communities where relationships matter deeply.
The new neighborhood of Charter Colony created another opportunity for the agency to expand locally. Located near Brandermill, the Colony Crossing office gave the agency a modern, high-tech space in the heart of a growing community.
By 2010, it was time to prepare the agency for its next stage of growth. Reta's son, Nick Springer, was promoted to Vice President of the agency, marking the beginning of a more formal plan for expansion, modernization, and long-term leadership.
By 2016, the agency needed more room again — and this time, windows were a must. Commonwealth Centre offered the perfect location, overlooking the water while keeping the agency close to its Midlothian roots.
From one office in Houston to a growing independent agency serving clients across Virginia and beyond, our story continues to be written every day. Technology changes. Insurance changes. Communities change. Our commitment to helping clients protect what matters most never will.
