History

We've celebrated many milestones throughout our history. By keeping our policyholders' best interest in mind, Auto-Owners Insurance will continue to put lives back together and grow its list of accomplishments.

July 1916

Vern V. Moulton and four other associates organize Auto-Owners Insurance Company in one room of the Commercial Block Building in the central Michigan city of Mount Pleasant.

December 1935

Auto-Owners begins writing insurance in Indiana, its first state outside of Michigan.

June 1951

The Company unveils its new home office in downtown Lansing. The $1.5 million four-story facility provides much-needed space for the 400 associates who had been working in various buildings scattered throughout Lansing.

July 2016

Auto-Owners celebrates its 100th anniversary in business.

Today

Auto-Owners writes insurance in 26 states and employs more than 4,700 associates.

Auto-Owners Insurance Group continues to be recognized for exceptional financial strength and stability among the nation's largest insurers. Comprised of 16 property & casualty companies and one life/health/annuity insurer, the companies had combined assets of $32,480,501,816 at year-end 2021. Net written premiums totaled $9,874,154,474, up by $1.64 billion from the previous year. More than 6.2 million personal and commercial insurance policies were in force at year-end.
