When purchasing a new car, do not rely on the dealer to insure it too. While they will ask for a copy of your insurance card, this is merely to prove to the DMV and the Bank that you have an active policy. That is where their insurance work usually stops.
While most policies in VA do give some coverage for a newly purchased vehicle, it is probably not what you think it is. You MUST call your insurance agent to add the car. MUST!
This is just referring to Private Passenger Automobiles... not RVs, Motorcycles, Boats etc... just cars owned by you. Those never have coverage on your current auto policy.
